LAND ROVER AJ-V8 ENGINE
The AJ-V8 is Jaguar Land Rover's second-generation V8 petrol engine, in production from 1998 to 2015. It was fitted to the Range Rover Sport L320 across two main configurations: the 4.2-litre supercharged V8 and the 4.4-litre naturally aspirated V8.
This engine family represents the earlier generation of JLR V8s, preceding the later 5.0-litre AJ133 that would replace it in the model line-up. The L320 Range Rover Sport was the primary application for this engine in the Land Rover range, offered from launch in 2005 through to the model's replacement in 2013.

WHAT WE REPLACE:

KNOWN ISSUES:
Timing chain tensioner wear is documented on higher-mileage examples. Valve seal deterioration can lead to increased oil consumption. On supercharged variants, the supercharger coupler can wear over time, causing rattling or whining noises. Early engines (1998-2002) had Nikasil cylinder lining issues caused by reaction with high-sulphur fuel, but this is less relevant to L320 applications (2005-2013) as the issue was addressed.

The AJ-V8's timing chain system uses a conventional front-mounted chain arrangement, with tensioners and guides that wear over time. On higher-mileage examples, the timing chain tensioners can lose tension, creating a rattling noise on cold start that usually goes away as oil pressure builds. Over time, the aluminium guide rails (on early examples) and tensioner wear can lead to chain slack and, if left unaddressed, more significant engine damage. On supercharged variants, the supercharger coupler is a known wear item - a rubber isolator within the supercharger drive that can break down over time, creating a characteristic rattling or whining noise from the supercharger area. The supercharger itself is also inspected for bearing wear, as the additional load on the engine and the heat generated by forced induction puts more stress on certain components.
