ABOUT THE
LAND ROVER AJ133 ENGINE

The AJ133 is Jaguar Land Rover's third-generation 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, in production from 2009 to 2024. It was the final development of the AJ-V8 family and served as the flagship petrol engine across both Jaguar and Land Rover ranges for over a decade.
In Land Rover applications, the AJ133 appears in two distinct forms: the supercharged V8 fitted to the modern Defender P525 and the supercharged V8 in the limited-run Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. Beyond Land Rover, the same engine family powered a wide range of Jaguar models including the F-Type R, XFR, XKR and XJ Supersport - though our work here covers Land Rover-badged applications specifically.

LAND ROVER AJ133
APPLICATIONS BY MODEL
The AJ133 is fitted to the Defender (L663) in its P525 (V8) form from 2020 to the present - a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that transformed the modern Defender's performance profile. The same supercharged engine also appeared in the Range Rover Velar (L560) as the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, a limited-run variant produced for the 2019 model year only.
LAND ROVER AJ133
ENGINE COMPATIBILITY
Because the AJ133 spans two distinct Land Rover models and multiple generations across the wider JLR range, compatibility comes down to confirming your exact model, generation, and whether the engine is naturally aspirated or supercharged. A supercharged AJ133 from a Defender isn't a drop-in match for a naturally aspirated AJ133 from an earlier Discovery or Range Rover - ancillaries, engine management, and mounting all differ. We always match by registration/VIN before confirming any rebuild or replacement.

Land Rover AJ133 Applications We Work On
AJ133 in the Defender (L663, 2020-present)
The AJ133 in the Defender is one of the applications we work on - the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 fitted to the Defender P525 (V8) from 2020 onwards. It's the flagship petrol option in the modern Defender range, delivered as a supercharged V8 with outputs between 510 and 575 hp depending on specification.

OUR WORKSHOP VIEW OF
THE LAND ROVER AJ133

Built, rebuilt and tested by engineers who work on Land Rover engines every day.
Here's our practical view of the AJ133 across its Land Rover applications.
APPLICATIONS WE SEE:
The AJ133 appears in the Defender (P525) and the Velar SVAutobiography - the flagship petrol options across the Land Rover range.
WHAT WE REPLACE:
Timing chains, guides, tensioners, bearings, gaskets, and supercharger coupler (where applicable) as standard on every rebuild.
KNOWN ISSUES:
Early AJ133 engines (2009-2012) suffered timing chain guide failure because the guide rails were not strong enough - the aluminium guide rails were weaker than the steel tensioners, causing the tensioner to dig into the guide and wear it down over time, eventually leading to the chain skipping. JLR addressed this in 2015 with a revised guide rail featuring a steel indent, though examples of timing chain failure from 2015 onward have been reported due to carbon and sludge build-up restricting oil flow to the tensioner. Cam phaser failure is also common on higher-mileage examples. Rattling on cold start is typically caused by worn chain tensioners failing to maintain adequate tension before oil pressure builds. Land Rover AJ133 Generations/Revisions The AJ133 underwent several revisions during its production life: Early engines (2009-2012): Timing chain guide rails were made of aluminium and were weaker than the steel tensioners. Tensioners would dig into the guide rails and wear them down over time, potentially causing the chain to skip. 2013-2014: Incremental improvements to the timing chain system. 2015 onwards: JLR introduced a revised guide rail featuring a steel indent to address the wear issue. However, examples of timing chain failure from 2015 onward have been reported due to carbon and sludge build-up restricting oil flow to the tensioner. Naturally Aspirated vs Supercharged: Supercharged variants carry additional components including the supercharger, supercharger coupler, and associated cooling system.

A TYPICAL
LAND ROVER AJ133 REBUILD
The following describes a typical rebuild scope for this engine - illustrative of the work involved, not a specific customer job. Real case studies from our own completed work will replace this section once available.
The AJ133's timing chain system is a known critical wear point. On early engines (2009-2012), the guide rails were not strong enough - the aluminium guide rails were weaker than the steel tensioners. Tensioners would dig into the guide rails and wear them down over time, potentially leading to the chain skipping. JLR addressed this in 2015 with a revised guide rail featuring a steel indent, though later failures have been reported due to carbon and sludge build-up restricting oil flow to the tensioner. Cam phaser failure is also common on higher-mileage examples. Rattling on cold start is typically caused by worn chain tensioners failing to maintain adequate tension before oil pressure builds. On supercharged variants, the supercharger coupler is also inspected and replaced as standard.
Typical Scope:
Timing chains, guides, tensioners, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, plus supercharger coupler on supercharged variants

Land Rover AJ133 ENGINE REBUILD COST

A Land Rover AJ133 naturally aspirated engine rebuild starts from £4,500. A full replacement engine and fitting service is also available. LAND ROVER AJ133 REBUILD VS REPLACEMENT VS USED
Rebuilding Your AJ133 Engine
Most engine suppliers sell you a used engine of unknown history and hope it matches. We rebuild the engine your Land Rover already has instead - strip it down, pressure-test it, and replace every worn or damaged component with updated OEM parts. You get a near-new engine with a 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty, without the compatibility risk of an unknown used unit. This is the option most AJ133 owners choose.
- Strip down & inspect
- Pressure-test
- Replace worn components
- 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty
Replacement AJ133 Engines
If your existing engine is beyond economical repair, we also offer full engine replacement and fitting - sourced and fitted by our team, with the same 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty.
- Supplied & fitted by our team
- OEM quality
- 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty
Used AJ133 Engines
In some cases, a matched low-mileage used engine is the right call - particularly if you need your car back on the road quickly and your existing engine's damage is extensive. We can source and fit these too, though most owners who ask about used engines end up choosing a rebuild once they understand the compatibility risk a used unit carries.
- Low-mileage units
- Quick turnaround
- Condition risk - we advise honestly
LAND ROVER AJ133 Reconditioned, Refurbished or Remanufactured?
LAND ROVER AJ133 RECONDITIONED ENGINES
"Reconditioned" is the term many owners search for when they mean the same thing as a rebuild - a full strip-down, inspection, and replacement of worn parts rather than a straight swap. If that's what you're after, our rebuild service is exactly that.
LAND ROVER AJ133 REFURBISHED ENGINES
"Refurbished" often describes the same process from a different angle - restoring your existing engine to full working condition rather than replacing it outright. Our rebuild covers this.
LAND ROVER AJ133 REMANUFACTURED ENGINES
Some owners specifically search for a "remanufactured" engine, expecting a unit rebuilt to original specification with updated components. That's consistent with what our rebuild service delivers, regardless of which of the six AJ133-equipped models you drive.
Terminology Explained
Rebuilt:
Existing engine stripped, inspected and rebuilt to original specification.
Reconditioned:
Broad industry term; we define our rebuild as a full strip and rebuild.
Remanufactured:
Usually implies a defined restoration process; our rebuild meets this standard.
Used:
Existing engine from another vehicle; we can source and fit these.
What Land Rover Garage means by “rebuild”
Full strip-down, inspection, measurement, machining where required, replacement of worn components, reassembly, testing, and refit - with a 12-month unlimited-mileage warranty.
