The S68 is BMW M's twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, used in Land Rover applications from 2024. It's the highest-performance combustion engine in the current Land Rover range, fitted to the Defender Octa, Range Rover SV and Range Rover Sport SV.
The S68 is a BMW M-sourced engine - the same engine family that powers BMW's own M performance models - and it's the first time this specific engine has appeared in Land Rover's portfolio.

Across the Defender, the S68 powers the Octa (L663, 2024-present) - the most powerful production Defender ever made, producing up to 635 hp. The Range Rover uses the S68 in the SV (L460, 2024-present), a high-performance luxury SUV variant. The Range Rover Sport follows the same pattern with the SV (L461, 2024-present), offering the same S68 powerplant in a sportier body shell. All three applications use the S68 with 48V mild-hybrid assistance.

KNOWN ISSUES:
Turbocharger problems due to oil starvation are a known characteristic of the S68 V8 BiTurbo - the twin-turbo configuration can develop bearing damage from inadequate lubrication. Oil starvation is a frequent cause, especially after hot shutdown without a cool-down phase. Increased oil consumption is also a known characteristic of this engine. The hot-vee design (similar to BMW's N63) means heat-related component degradation is possible. We don't treat the S68 as having a universal failure mode - diagnosis is required to establish whether an engine needs repair, rebuild or replacement.

Oil starvation is a known concern for the turbochargers, particularly after hot shutdown without a proper cool-down phase.
