What This Service Involves
Engine bearings — main bearings and big-end (connecting rod) bearings — support the crankshaft and connecting rods inside your Land Rover's engine. Over time, bearings wear, oil pressure drops, and a knocking sound develops from the bottom end of the engine.
Replacing engine bearings involves:
- Removing the engine oil sump
- Accessing the crankshaft and connecting rods
- Removing worn main bearing and big-end bearing shells
- Fitting new bearing shells and thrust washers
- Reassembling with correct torque specifications
- Testing oil pressure and road-testing the vehicle
Note: For many Land Rover models, engine bearing replacement requires the engine to be removed from the vehicle due to limited access. This is included as part of our service.

Our Process
Assessment & Removal
Vehicle arrives at our workshop. Engine oil is drained. The engine is either removed and mounted on a stand (for full bottom-end work) or accessed from below with the vehicle on a lift.
Disassembly
Oil sump removed. Oil pump removed. Timing cover removed where needed for access. Main bearing caps and connecting rod caps identified and marked for correct reassembly.
Bearing Removal
Main bearing cap bolts removed. Main bearing caps removed. Upper and lower main bearing shells recovered. Thrust washers recovered. Connecting rod caps removed. Big-end bearing shells recovered.
Inspection & Preparation
Crankshaft journals measured for ovality and taper. Where required, the crankshaft is ground or polished. Connecting rods checked and re-sized where needed. Bearing clearances measured using plastigauge or micrometres.
Reassembly
New main bearing shells installed (upper and lower). New big-end bearing shells installed. New thrust washers fitted. Main bearing caps refitted and torqued to Land Rover's factory specification (cross-bolted where required). Connecting rod caps refitted and torqued.
Refitting & Testing
Oil pump refitted. Oil sump refitted with new gasket. Timing cover refitted. New engine oil and filter fitted. Engine started and run to operating temperature. Oil pressure checked. Road test performed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs that my Land Rover needs engine bearing replacement?
A knocking sound from the bottom of the engine, low oil pressure warning lights, or a metallic rattle that increases with engine speed are common indicators. These symptoms suggest worn main bearings or big-end bearings.
Can engine bearings be replaced without removing the engine?
On some Land Rover models, bearing replacement can be performed with the engine in situ by accessing from below. However, on most models — particularly the TDV6/SDV6 and V8 engines — the engine needs to be removed for proper access. We assess this on a case-by-case basis.
How long does engine bearing replacement take on a Land Rover?
Bearing replacement typically takes 3-5 working days from arrival at our workshop. This includes disassembly, inspection, crankshaft measurement (and grinding if required), reassembly, and road testing.
What's included in your engine bearing replacement service?
Removal of the oil sump, removal and replacement of main bearings and big-end bearings, new thrust washers, crankshaft inspection, new oil and filter, oil pressure testing, and a road test. All work comes with a 12-month, unlimited mileage warranty.
Will you replace my Land Rover's crankshaft if it's damaged?
We inspect the crankshaft journals during the bearing replacement. If scoring or out-of-tolerance wear is found, we can grind the crankshaft or replace it as part of the service. This would be discussed and quoted before work proceeds.
