What Land Rover Engine Machining Involves
Engine machining is a precision workshop process that restores critical engine components to factory tolerances. As part of every full engine rebuild we carry out, our in-house machine shop performs the following operations:
- Cylinder Boring & Honing — worn bores are bored to an oversize and honed to a cross-hatch finish for optimal oil retention and piston seal.
- Crankshaft Grinding & Polishing — main and big-end journals are ground undersize and polished to restore smooth running surfaces.
- Cylinder Head Resurfacing — the head face is machined flat to ensure a perfect seal with the block.
- Valve Guide & Seat Work — guides are replaced and seats recut for proper valve sealing.
- Pressure Testing & Crack Detection — blocks and heads are tested for integrity before reassembly.
All machining is performed to manufacturer specifications using precision measuring equipment and industry-standard tolerances. The work is carried out on-site in our dedicated machine shop, not outsourced.

Machining is included as standard in every engine rebuild we undertake. Rebuild prices start from:
- 4‑cylinder diesel (classic / Ingenium) — £1,900 – £2,200
- 4‑cylinder petrol (Ingenium) — £2,200
- 6‑cylinder diesel (TDV6/SDV6/Ingenium I6) — £2,400 – £3,200
- V8 (naturally aspirated) — £4,500
- V8 supercharged (AJ133, SVR) — £5,500
- V8 twin-turbo (Octa) — £6,500

Our Machining Process
Inspection & Measurement
Every component is inspected and measured for wear, ovality, taper, and surface condition to determine the required machining.
Cylinder Boring
Worn bores are bored to an oversize dimension on our precision boring machine, matching the new oversize pistons.
Cylinder Honing
The bores are honed to final size with a cross‑hatch pattern for oil retention, verified with bore gauges.
Crankshaft Grinding & Polishing
Main and big‑end journals are ground undersize and polished to restore smooth surfaces, with new bearings sized accordingly.
Cylinder Head Resurfacing
The cylinder head face is machined flat to ensure a perfect seal with the block.
Valve Guide & Seat Work
Guides are replaced, seats recut, and valves refaced and lapped for proper sealing.
Cleaning & Pressure Testing
All components are ultrasonically cleaned, then pressure‑tested and crack‑detected to ensure integrity.
Final Quality Control
Every machined part is measured against specifications before being released for assembly.

Do you use new parts after machining?
Yes. We fit new oversize pistons and rings, undersize bearings, valve guides, and seals as needed. All parts are sourced from reputable suppliers and meet manufacturer specifications.
Can you machine an engine that has already been rebuilt elsewhere?
