Land Rover Engine Teardown & Inspection

A detailed strip-down and component inspection process performed at our Essex workshop.

What Our Teardown & Inspection Covers

Our strip-down and inspection service is the foundation of every rebuild and replacement we carry out. It establishes the exact condition of your engine and determines which components can be salvaged or require replacement.

  • Full engine removal and mounting on the workshop stand
  • Removal of all ancillaries, manifolds, and turbochargers
  • Timing cover removal and timing component inspection
  • Cylinder head removal, disassembly, and crack/pressure testing
  • Sump removal and bottom-end access (crankshaft, bearings, pistons)
  • Precision measurement of bores, crankshaft journals, and bearing clearances
  • Detailed assessment of all components for reusability

Engine rebuilds start from £1,900 (classic 4-cyl diesel).

Full strip-down and inspection is included as part of every rebuild or replacement package. Pricing disclaimer.

Applicable Land Rover Models & Engine Families

Our full teardown and inspection process applies across the entire Land Rover range. Below are the core models and engines we routinely strip down and assess.

Key variants commonly inspected:

Our Teardown & Inspection Process

1

Engine Arrival & Mounting

Engine arrives at the workshop, is removed from the vehicle (if not already), and secured on the engine stand.

2

Ancillary & Manifold Removal

Alternator, starter, belts, pulleys, intake/exhaust manifolds, and turbochargers are carefully removed.

3

Timing Cover & Component Access

Timing cover is removed to inspect chains, tensioners, guides, and sprockets for wear or stretch.

4

Cylinder Head Removal

Head bolts are loosened and the cylinder head is lifted away for disassembly and crack/pressure testing.

5

Sump & Bottom-End Access

Sump is removed to expose the crankshaft, oil pump, and connecting rods.

6

Piston & Bearing Removal

Pistons, connecting rods, and bearing shells are removed and labelled for inspection.

7

Precision Measurement

Cylinder bores, crank journals, and bearing clearances are measured using precision instruments.

8

Component Assessment

All components are assessed against manufacturer tolerances to determine reusability or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a full teardown inspection cover on a Land Rover engine?

It covers complete strip-down of ancillaries, timing components, cylinder head, and bottom-end. Every component is inspected and measured for wear against factory tolerances to determine reusability.

Which components do you check during a teardown inspection?

We check timing chains, tensioners, guides, cylinder head cracks, valve seats, bore ovality, piston ring gaps, crankshaft journal wear, bearing clearances, and oil pump condition.

How long does the teardown and inspection take?

Typically 1-2 working days for the full strip-down and measurement process. This is part of the 3-5 day rebuild turnaround.

Do you provide a report after the inspection?

Yes. We provide a clear breakdown of components that are salvageable and those that must be replaced, along with the reasons and measurements taken.

What happens if the engine is not rebuildable after inspection?

If the block or head is beyond salvage, we discuss replacement options with you. We supply and fit replacement engines as an alternative.
